Why I Love Our Product and Our Company

An interview with Senior Software Engineer, Bhakti Mehta

What do you work on for Blue Jeans?
I work on the Middleware team at Blue Jeans Network. We are responsible for powering the platform for the world's first interoperable video conferencing solution in the cloud. Our goal is to provide a stable, resilient, reliable and scalable platform. My team is responsible for building RESTful APIs that are consumed by our partners, ISV and the developer community.

Why do you work at Blue Jeans Network?
Blue Jeans Network is breaking barriers and connecting enterprises together. The team, technology, culture and the challenges facing the organization to scale motivates me to work at BJN.

Team: The leadership team has a strong background, great vision and solid execution from day to day decisions to long term strategies.

Technology: Blue Jeans Network was started with a mission of making video meetings easy and interoperable. We are relentlessly innovating using the state of the art technology to build products that deliver great value to the customers.

Culture: The open culture and transparency at BJN is what the team believes in and stands for. We have regular updates and transparent communication that helps to keep the context and purpose across the organization.

Challenges at scale: As the organization is growing, we have to ask ourselves, “how will we continually innovate and build resilient systems?” From the engineering perspective these kinds of challenges are what really inspire me.

Why did you go into engineering? What do you enjoy most?
I have always been intrigued in undertaking hard problems and solving them. As a student I was always interested in STEM related subjects and engineering was the natural choice for me. My favorite subjects were Robotics and Image Processing and I could spend hours working on coding assignments and then redoing them to optimize the performance. While working on my Masters in Computer Science I interned with Sun Microsystems and never looked back. I have been blessed to get a chance to learn from and work with some of the smartest people in the industry.

I enjoy designing and building products that can make a huge impact and working as part of a team. It is extremely gratifying to see the work on which we put endless hours and effort be used by millions of people.

What has been the most challenging part of your career?
I am passionate about writing technical tips, contributing to articles in magazines, blogs and presentations to highlight new technologies and solutions we have created. Inspite of a busy work schedule, I try to find time to follow this passion. During the last couple of years, I got opportunities to author two books. Developing RESTful Services with JAX-RS 2.0, WebSockets, and JSON, was published in 2013 and RESTful Java Patterns and Best Practices, published in 2014. These were some of the formidable yet most memorable parts of my career. I believe in having a positive attitude and persistence in following your dreams, and then nothing can stop you from achieving your goals.

How would you describe the people at BJN?
People at BJN have a very positive and CAN DO Attitude and there is an amazing trust, mutual respect and understanding across the different teams. Everyone works really hard and has fun in the process too. As part of the engineering team we regularly interact with marketing, sales, support, customer success and value their feedback.

The energy is infectious. The management encourages creativity, recognizes individuality, empowers people and acknowledges achievements. I joined almost two years ago and since then the team has grown and the enthusiasm has doubled. From overnight hackathons, to the fast paced environment, to the product release celebrations and stimulating brainstorming sessions, there is never a dull moment. It is mind boggling to see how much the team achieves in a short period of time. Undoubtedly BJN has incredible talent and culture.
